Today the idea of the knife has been taken and specialized into many areas. You have cooking knives, hunting knives, survival knives, novelty knives (such as items from a show like Star Trek or some other genre) and much more. There are knife enthusiasts out there who will find this a fulfilling hobby because of the many variations of pieces available.

Particularly the subject of interest here are survival knives. What makes a survival knife? Generally the term suggests something that helps you survive or live out in the wild in case you get lost. Although at first that makes sense, with further thinking it is hard to "imagine" other than a sharp blade what you could need to survive. But there is very much.

Survival knives are multi-faceted and often have multiple functions. Other than just being able to defend yourself or cut up materials for building - they can open canned food or start a fire with a mirror-surface. These other types of functions are what make survival knives different than just a blade you can get at WalMart.

It was early in summer vacation, and my brothers and I had just gotten out of school for the season. This was always our favorite time of year. Our father Steve was treating us to a summer vacation to Yosemite. I could not wait to get there.
Since we were going to an out door type place, my brothers who were a bit older were all allowed to bring their hunting knives for fun. I was younger, and not allowed to have any hunting knives yet. I looked forward to the day when I would also be able to have my own hunting knife one day.
We arrived in Yosemite and had so much fun looking at all the tourist type things. I loved going into the gift shops and checking out all the neat little trinkets and post cards. My favorite post cards were the ones that had the beautiful shots of Yosemite. In these gift shops, I also got to look at all the nice hunting knives. After a lot of begging, I finally got my dad to buy me a few hunting knives for when I got older. Now that I am older, I use my hunting knives all the time!

I like to take a few different sized ones each time and try them out to see which size works best. My son recently borrowed one of my favorite ones, so I decided to go online and pick out another one to try out. It was kind of last minute since I would be leaving in a few days to go hunting, but the best deals are always online, so it was not a big deal.
A few weeks ago, it was finally time to go. I brought a few friends with me and we went to check out how my buck knives worked, and at the same time try to bag a few deer. It was perfect weather out, and the sky was amazingly beautiful for this time of year. My friend Sarah remarked that we were really lucky to not have any snow while we were up north hunting. Finally, as the day was almost over, we found a deer and Sarah bagged it! I tried out one of my new buck knives, and it worked perfectly for the job. Once again, I felt so happy that I had brought my Buck knives for our hunt.

They do several hunting trips every year. So for my mom hunting knives are not something to collect but a much needed tool. She judges hunting knives not on how they look, but how they function. Over the years my mom has tried many hunting knives. Now she pretty much sticks with her favorites. I know that if she loses or damages a hunting knife she is going to try and replace it with the same one if she can. No more experimenting and testing new knives, she likes what she has. My step-dad on the other hand is always on the lookout for a new flashy hunting knife. He likes having something that not only gets the job done but also looks nice. He has a collection of different knives, most of which he has used once or twice. Some though are strictly for looking at. The pride of his collection are ones my mother has given him over the years. They usually don’t make it out on hunting trips but live in his display case.

He has a few buck knives that were his father's and those are among the one's for show only.

I like to add to his collection when possible. My brother in law not only has buck knives in that display case he also collects other hunting related goodies. On the wall above the display case is the bust and head of a deer. You will also find other small animals and several racks of horns. I may not have the correct terminology but I hope you get the idea. This is strictly a hunting related room.

I have spent sometime online recently looking for new buck knives to add to his collection. I believe I found the perfect one that will signify his recent hunting trophy and another that will remind him of his Dad. My brother in law is a great guy. I would like to remember him with these special buck knives this holiday season.

Her husband has collected survival knives since high school. He's not an outdoor enthusiast or anything, but he attended military academy and has always enjoyed the look and feel of well-crafted survival knives. Of his collection of survival knives, there was one in particular that he prized most. My sister had given it to him for his birthday. It was small and simple, with a strong steel blade and plain black handle. He carried it with him everywhere and found a hundred mundane uses for it in the course of his daily activities. Well, about three months ago, he realized he couldn't find it and figured he had lost it at work. He's a warehouse manager for a major wine and spirits distributor, and he's always using it to open boxes and packages and the like. So, he spent three months mourning the loss of one of his favorite survival knives. Then last week my sister happened to be cleaning up their bedroom and decided to check under their mattress for anything that didn't belong there. Among a wealth of other items, she found her husband's knife. It must have fallen out of his pocket. It was the last place they would have looked for the knife! But the funniest thing is that they have a waterbed! To think of that knife just sitting there directly under their waterbed mattress definitely made me laugh. They were pretty lucky; the mattress wasn't even punctured. Her husband was thrilled to have one of his favorite survival knives back, and my sister vowed to clean up under the mattress more often!

Thousands of different brands of knives from hundreds of manufacturers. Buck knives had an awesome display, and Gerber knives stole the show with their new multi-tools. The custom knife section was equally as impressive. There were knives that had been folded hundreds of times so that the blades looked alive and beautiful. There was also a kiosk set up with new prototypes. Knives that literally will catch your dinner, clean it and then light the fire to cook it. One knife even had a two shot twenty-two caliber gun built into the handle, crazy. The other section of this show was the fantasy knife and sword section. Beautifully crafted pieces that inspire imagination and awe. One gentleman that hand forges his own line of custom swords let me hold one that was perfectly balanced and surprisingly light. When I looked down at the price tag I almost choked, thirty-eight thousand dollars! I talked with him for a bit and he told me he only makes two to three swords a year. He also uses the finest steel and the latest forging methods. All of his swords are also chryogenically treated, making them much harder and the steel denser. How cool.

I’m sure all those people who have been finding and chopping wood for fireplace warmth in the past are doing it even more this year as everyone is trying to cut back on costs. It is amazing how much heat can come out of a wood burning stove and it’s free as long as there is trees nearby.

My mom used to have me go out to the side of our house and chop wood until the garage wood chest was full. Sometimes I would take buck knives out into our woods and cut off skinny branches for kindling. Between an ax and buck knives it is pretty easy to come out with firewood when you live next to a forest. It has been awhile since I chopped wood or sliced up branches with buck knives but the memories are still there. This is one of little benefits people near forests get to take advantage of. I miss it.

After explaining to me what the various blades were for and showing me how to keep them sharp I was the proud owner of the first of many buck knives I have owned over the years. Most of my buck knives have been pen knives I can easily carry in my pants pocket but I did receive a larger buck knife from the company I worked for as a safety award. I carry this buck knife strapped to my belt when I go hunting. contrary to what many people may think, buck knives did not get their name from "buck" or male deer. This is the name of the family who began producing these fine knives in 1902 in El Cajon, California by the founder of the company Hoyt Buck. Over the past one hundred years buck knives have gained a reputation as well made knives and the company produces not only hunting knives but also survival knives and knives for many other uses.

I instant messaged the link to my sister and she's seriously thinking about buying it for them. Like us, they are serious campers, but he doesn't have any kind survival knives, and this one includes a saw blade along with a regular knife blade. Having survival knives like this along could make the difference between having enough firewood and kindling to start a fire to stay warm at night or on chilly days. It also doesn't weigh much or take up much space in the camping gear, and the fact that the case is red makes it much more visible, both in the camping gear or just laying around the campsite. I think she's going to consider survival knives for his Christmas present. This one is made by Kershaw Knives, and it would be handy around the house, too. It never occurred to her to give him a survival knife, so I'm glad I ran across it and shared the information with her.

These can make the difference between having a great time camping or being challenged to get through the camping trip and having a good time. According to experts, the best survival knives are smaller knives with double cutting edges. These will cut most materials and can be sharpened in the outdoors using a sharpening stone. We would not think of leaving home without our survival knives as part of the essntial camping gear. We have a checklist that we go through, and the knives are at the top of the list. We can use them for cutting lots of different mateials, including branches to use for firewood kindling or removing stingers from bees. Thankfully, we have never had to use survival knives for any kind of emergency but the latter and stripping bark from branches to roast marshmallows. But one never knows when something drastic will happen, and that survival knife will make the difference between comfort or challenge. Sometimes if we go fishing, we'll use the knives for cleaning the fish if we are lucky enough to catch something. It's nice to know we have ways to easily harvest our own food in the wild with our survival knives, too.

Buck knives are great for hunting, and having survival knives is essential anytime you are out in the country. Two of my favorite shows to watch on television are "Survivorman," and "Man Versus Wild." I think it is so interesting to see these men put out alone in the wilderness with no food, water, and very little tools. They are there for a certain number of days, and they must live off the land, and eventually make their way to a location for the final pickup.

I learned you must have hunting knives if nothing else because you cannot survive without food or water, and you must have some sort of knife to meet those needs. The good thing about watching shows like that is you learn what things you must do, what is edible, what you must do you obtain water...it is a tremendous amount of knowledge; but, if you were put in that situation, at least you might survive.

Seeing Another Day with Survival Knives

http://www.survivalknivesplus.com/2009/August/Seeing-Another-Day-with-Survival-Knives.htm

<img title="Survival Knives" height="98" alt="survival knives" Knives" src="http://admin.moguling.com/Upload/survivalknivesplus.com/kinfe2.jpg" width="95" />I am very intrigued just like millions of others with spectacular stories of survival from people who faced death, kept a level head and saw another day. I remember a semi recent story in the news about a man who was confronted by a cougar and managed to escape with his life because of survival knives skills learned in the military. People like Aron Ralston who became a national symbol of survival after getting stuck under a fallen boulder while rock climbing come to mind as well. In 2003, he escaped by amputating his own arm and trekking back to civilization. His story is tragic, amazing, documented and shows the most extreme use of survival knives I have ever heard of.

Survival knives are a key component to many of the stories we hear from people lost in the bush, jungle, hiking or at sea. Many of them turn to survival knives to create shelter, catch food and in the case Aron Ralston, free himself to survive. I find it very inspiring to hear stories like this which hammer home the point of never going out into the wild without survival knives. There are so many purposes for a device humans have crafted since the beginning of time.
